APR Motorsports Audi R8 Grand-Am Slows After Strong Start at Grand Prix of Miami
Norman and von Moltke Encounter Teething Problems in Rain-Shortened Race April 30, 2012 (Homestead, Fla.) Despite the certainty of rain at the Grand Prix of Miami, the third round of the 2012 GRAND-AM Rolex Sports Car Series, Dr. Jim Norman and Dion von Moltke, drivers of the no. 51 APR Audi R8 Grand-Am, were excited to race. While Audis Quattro system would have been immensely useful in the rainy conditions, von Moltke wheeled the two-wheel-drive R8 Grand-Am to the third quickest time in the final practice session, which was held in the rain. Von Moltke was tasked with starting the race, taking a combined green/yellow flag to start the race as the field circulated slowly in the heavy rain. When the race did go green, von Moltke moved from his starting position of twelfth as high as seventh, running times on pace with the leading GT cars. During the second of two full course caution periods that were thrown when the conditions got worse, the team pitted the car and put Norman in. As the race returned to green, Norman began to suffer from a lack of power caused when the computer running the 5.2 liter V10 engine began to go into limp mode. Resetting the Audis ECU would temporarily cure the problem, and Norman continued to post strong lap times despite having to perform multiple resets per lap. However, the situation gradually worsened and Norman was forced to pit under green flag conditions. Ultimately, the car would lose two laps to the GT leaders. Von Moltke would get back in the car but the problems persisted, leaving the no. 51 APR Audi R8 Grand-Am in seventeenth position when the race was called 50 minutes early due to the conditions. The conditions were really, really bad, but if the car hadnt been breaking up we would have had a really good result, said Norman. As bad as the conditions were, the car was actually very good in the rain. I enjoy racing here but Ive never seen rain like that. Well regroup with the APR crew and be ready for the next race in New Jersey. Von Moltke, who passed several cars in the opening stint, was also disappointed that the teams car encountered problems in the wet race. I was having a blast out there, the Audi R8 Grand-Am was really good in the rain, said von Moltke. But this was the first time weve run the car in conditions like that and we encountered a problem that we would never have encountered unless we were in such heavy rain. But the APR guys always do a phenomenal job and Im really thankful for their support and we know the car will be strong in New Jersey. No. 51 APR Audi R8 Grand-Am soldiers home in 14th after Multiple Incidents May 14, 2012 (Opelika, Ala.) Not having the race that they were looking for, Dr. Jim Norman and Dion von Moltke drove their no. 51 APR Audi R8 Grand-Am to a 14th place finish in Sundays Global Barter 250 Presented by Susan G. The incident caused him to go a lap down on the GT leader. Von Moltke took over during a green flag stop, but he was hit hard on the right side by another Daytona Prototype, causing the Audi to go down another lap. He would ultimately finish in 14th place. While the separate incidents would cost the team a chance at the top-10 result that they were seeking, Norman and von Moltke found a real challenge in racing the R8 Grand-Am over the course of a stint at NJMP. We know that the R8 is a sleeping giant, said Norman. Each race we come a little bit closer to unlocking the potential of the car. APR and Audi are working hard to develop the Grand-Am spec of the car to make it as competitive as it has proven to be in its LMS spec. It isnt there yet but we are hoping that between now and the stretch of races in June well be able to make some changes to the car that will help us show what it is truly capable of. We all want to see the Audi running at the front. Von Moltke, who set top-three times in the car during the final two practice sessions for the Global Barter 250, echoed Normans thoughts. We learned more about the car this weekend, said von Moltke. It was disappointing to lose the laps that we did after Dr. Jim and I had contact with other cars, but we were able to achieve a decent race pace at the end. We have been moving in the right direction at each race so Im very confident that we will continue to improve. I know APR and Audi Sport are working very hard to find some more speed in the R8 Grand-Am, but I think we are just struggling a bit with the current rules package. The car is obviously fast but I think its being held back just a little too much right now. But looking ahead to the next race in Detroit, Im sure the guys will give Dr. Jim and I a competitive car for that race. Teams Audi R8 Grand-Am looks for another strong run, while von Molkte and Baas Are Back in APRs ST-class VWs in Homestead April 23, 2012 (Opelika, Ala.) While the beaches of South Beach arent too far away from Homestead-Miami Speedway, a sunny day on the beach with a Pina Colada in hand is not what the APR Motorsport team has in mind for this weekends Grand Prix of Miami. APR Motorsports Rolex Series drivers Dion von Moltke and Dr. Jim Norman, as well as CTSCC driver Josh Hurley, call the Grand Prix of Miami their home event as all three live in Florida. Von Moltke, a student at Florida International University, lives in Coral Cables, with Norman from Tampa Bay and Hurley from Gainesville. The no. 51 APR Audi R8 Grand-Am enjoyed a strong run at last months Porsche 250 at Barber Motorsports Park, employed an alternate fuel strategy that allowed the car to advance as high as second place. A late race caution negated their fuel advantage, but the team left pleased with the progress made in the break between Daytona and Barber. Gainesville resident Josh Hurley, teamed with Nate Norenberg in the no. 161 APR VW GTI, led the charge at Barber for the teams five ST-class cars at Barber, finishing twelfth on the strength of Norenbergs qualifying effort of sixth. The two will be looking to repeat APRs winning form at Homestead-Miami last year. The teams no. 171 APR VW GTI was retired after Aleks Altbergs incident on the final lap at Barber. APR Motorsport has built a new no. 171, which is actually a previous generation Mk. V VW GTI that the team raced in the 2011 season. With David Cheng unable to compete at Homestead-Miami due to a scheduling conflict, Ian Baas will partner with Altberg in to the no. 171 APR VW GTI. Baas drove to the ST-class victory at this race last year. Von Moltke will also step back into CTSCC competition as he will partner Juan Carlos Alvarez in the no. 131 APR VW Jetta GLI. Von Moltke began his professional racing career as a member of APR Motorsport in the ST class in 2008, winning three races in 2009. There isnt an event more important for APR Motorsport than this weekends GRAND-AM Rolex Sports Car Series and Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge races at Barber Motorsports Park. APR Motorsports home base is located just down the road from Barber in Opelika, and the team will enjoy considerable support from friends, family, customers, and employees for this weekends Porsche 250. The team will be hard to miss, as it brings seven race cars, several transporters, and a small army of staff. This is of course a very important weekend for our team, and our entire organization, said Stephen Hooks, President and CEO of APR. This is our home race and we want to put on a good show and represent APR well. We also want to rebound from a difficult weekend in Daytona, and all the guys have been flat out to improve all of our cars. Were ready. Returning to action for the first time since the season-opening Rolex 24 at Daytona, drivers Jim Norman and Dion von Molke will once again pilot the no. 51 APR Audi R8 Grand-Am in the Rolex Sports Car Series GT class. While the car endured a difficult Rolex 24 at Daytona, the team has been able to make significant improvements and the drivers enjoyed a very successful recent test in the car. Von Moltke recently competed at the 12 Hours of Sebring, where he anchored a Porsche to the GT-C class victory. Our test in the APR Audi R8 Grand-Am went really well, said von Moltke. We were surprised by the progress that we made and with the work that the guys at APR have done since then, I think we can surprise a lot of the paddock at Barber. After winning in Sebring, Im more motivated to join Dr. Jim and the APR Motorsport team and go after some wins in Grand-Am. The CTSCC program will grow to six cars as APR adds the no. 131 APR Jetta GLI in the ST class for Juan Carlos Alvarez, with APR Motorsport currently finalizing an agreement for his co-driver. Rookie Nelson Canache, driving the no. 41 APR Audi S4 that he shares with Ian Baas in the GS class, stormed from the back of the field to the front in Daytona before a mechanical issue caused the car to lose several laps. Likewise, David Cheng, in the no. 161 APR VW GTI that he shares with Aleks Altberg, had a similar charge through the field before that car was sidelined. Im excited for this weekends race at Barber, said Canache. It is a new challenge and such a technical track. It will be hard work for the drivers and the team to have the car in the best possible shape for the race. Im going to do my best on the driving side and work with the APR crew to improve our Audi S4, which is improving each time we go to the track. Since it is so close to APR, we really want a strong result. APR Motorsport bolsters technical staff with the addition of Mark Scott as teams Chief Engineer
January 18, 2012 (Opelika, Ala.) APR Motorsport is proud to announce the addition of Mark Scott to the technical staff of its Rolex Series program. Effective immediately, Scott will oversee the development of the teams Audi R8 Grand-Am, serving as the teams lead engineer. Scott originally from England, now residing in Indianapolis was almost literally born with gas in his veins when he was born above the gas station owned by his father. Beginning as a mechanic and amateur driver, Scotts motorsports career spans nearly forty years and covers everything from Formula Ford to Formula 1. While a mechanic at McLaren International, Scott was a part of the 1976 World Championship team with driver James Hunt. In 1984, Scott came to the United States for the first time as a Lead mechanic of Mayer Motor Racings Indianapolis 500 team, before moving to a Chief Mechanic and trackside engineering role for the Buick Indy program. In North America, Scott is best-known as half of former chassis constructor Riley & Scott. The companys best-known creation, the Riley & Scott Mk. III, dominated prototype racing in IMSA and the USRRC with 48 wins including three wins at the Rolex 24 at Daytona 38 pole positions, six drivers championships and three constructors championships. Riley & Scott also designed and developed the Cadillac Northstar LMP as well as chassis for the Trans-Am series. Returning to open-wheels, Scott operated the companys IndyCar program in 1998 and 1999. More recently, Scott has operated Prototype Development, which creates prototype parts in the auto racing, marine, and aircraft industries. Over the past two seasons, Scott has served as the race strategist and team manager for Genoa Racing in the American Le Mans Series and European Le Mans Series. Ive always had a passion for sports car racing, and joining APR Motorsport is very exciting for me, said Scott. The Audi R8 Grand-Am is a very impressive car and Im glad to have the chance to work with the team and its drivers to develop the car into a winner, especially in such a competitive season of GT-class racing. Scotts first race weekend with the team will be the 50th Rolex 24 at Daytona, which takes place in two weeks on January 28-29 at Daytona International Speedway.
